Frequently Asked Questions
What is the recommended equipment for planting?
When it comes to planting equipment, MMH recommends a commercial planter with sugar beet or hemp plates in place.
Typically, a farmer plants 12,890 hemp seeds per acre with 30" rows and 18" spacing.
There are other suitable planting methods out there, however— we recommend this method as it has been found to be effective and efficient for farmers planting MMH hemp seed.
What is the recommended equipment for harvesting?
A farmer can utilize the equipment below to achieve the different hemp end products. The recommendations are as follows:
- Hemp flower and biomass production - Chopper
- Hemp Biomass production - Bailer
- Hemp seed production - Combine with Stripper or Draper Head
Again, there are other acceptable harvesting methods, however — these recommendations have been found to be the most effective and efficient for farmers planting MMH hemp seed.
How large is a MMH Hemp Seed?
One average hemp seed is approximately the size of a sugar beet seed.
When does a farmer harvest their hemp?
Typically, the growing cycle for MMH Hemp Seed is around 90 days from when it is first planted to harvest. It is best growing practice for farmers to plant their hemp seed when the ground temperature is 51 degrees (Fahrenheit) or above.

What are the best soil conditions for hemp seed?
Hemp prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Therefore, you may need to till the soil and add compost or other organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.
Before planting our hemp seed, it is crucial that every farmer conduct a soil test to understand if any amendments are needed/recommended before planting. Please work with your agronomist on the testing process to ensure the best results.
Why does the price of hemp seed vary so drastically when researching online?
The price of hemp seeds can vary drastically based on a number of factors, including:
1. Quality: Higher quality hemp seeds, which are typically organic and free of contaminants — can be more expensive than lower quality seeds.
2. Quantity: Not unlike quality, the price of hemp seeds can also vary. Price depends on the quantity you're purchasing. As a general rule of thumb, the more you buy, the lower the cost per unit.
3. Processing: When it comes to processing, hemp seeds are hulled or have their outer shell removed, which can drive up the price.
4. Source: Hemp seeds come from a variety of sources from many different countries and growing conditions. The cost can vary based on where the hemp seeds are sourced from.
5. Brand: Different brands can have different pricing strategies based on factors such as marketing and distribution costs.
It's essential to research and compare prices from different sources to ensure you're getting a fair price for the quality and quantity of hemp seeds you're purchasing. Additionally, be sure to check for any additional fees such as shipping and handling costs.
Why does MMH recommend planting a ½ pound of hemp seed per acre?
1. Hemp plants can grow quite large. Depending on the specific cultivar and growing conditions, hemp plants can grow very tall and wide. Therefore, planting at a lower seeding rate can help ensure that the plants have enough space to grow and develop, without risking overcrowded.
2. Maximizing yield. By spacing plants out at a lower seeding rate, each plant has access to more nutrients, water, and sunlight. This can help drive a higher yield of biomass or flower per plant, which in turn translates into higher profits for farmers.
3. Cost efficiency. Hemp seed can be expensive, especially if farmers are using high-quality seeds. By planting at a lower rate, farmers can save money on seed costs, while still achieving a good crop yield.
It's important to note that the optimal seeding rate for hemp can depend on a variety of factors, including the specific cultivar, the climate and growing conditions, and the farmer's goals for the crop.
